The Brake Mechanics Part III: Stopping on a Dime


We talked about how your body handles force. We covered why your brain puts a speed limit on your movement, and how slowing down your exercises builds the physical tissue strength to absorb heavy impacts.

This is the final stage of a complete braking system: reactive deceleration. It is the ability to instantly hit the brakes and stabilize your entire body in a fraction of a second.


The Danger of the "Lazy" Stop

When most people need to stop moving quickly, they don't actually use their muscles to absorb the momentum. Instead, they rely on their joints and ligaments to do the dirty work.

Think about landing from a quick jump or stopping suddenly at the end of a sprint. If you hear a loud, heavy thud when your foot hits the ground, or if your knees instantly lock out straight, you aren't truly braking. You are simply slamming your body weight into your joint spaces, cartilage, and lower back.

This lack of reactive braking control is why so many people feel beat up after a workout or a day on the feet. Your body is fully capable of producing forward speed, but because it doesn't know how to turn on the muscles quickly enough to catch your weight, your skeleton takes a beating every time you try to slow down.


What You Can Do at Home

To train your body to react and stop quickly, you have to practice transitions from fast movement to an absolute dead stop.


Here's a great exercise to try at home. Stand tall on your tiptoes with your arms extended high above your head. In one fast, explosive motion, snap your arms down to your sides, drop your hips back into a quarter-squat, and slam your feet flat onto the floor.


The goal is to go from maximum height to a completely frozen, rock-solid position in an instant. When you hit the bottom, your hips should absorb the weight, and you should be so steady that someone could try to push you and you wouldn't budge. Practicing this teach your nervous system how to quickly fire the right muscles to catch your body weight before that impact can rattle your joints.
