You have been active all day, your legs feel solid, but then you stand for ten minutes to chat and suddenly your low back feels like it is locking up. What is going on?
The Locked Joint Trap When we get tired, we tend to hang on our joints. We shift our weight onto one hip, lock our knees, and let our spine take the slack. It is the path of least resistance, and your body loves it for about thirty seconds. After that, your muscles start to fatigue because they stopped working to stabilize your frame.
The Simple Fixes You do not need to be a biomechanics expert to change this. Next time you are standing around, try these three shifts:
Unlock your knees. Keep a tiny bend in them. If your knees are locked straight back, your core and glutes are essentially taking a nap. That little bend forces your muscles to do their job again.
Balance your weight. Avoid sinking into one hip. Keep your weight centered over the middle of your feet. If you are leaning, you are loading one side of your spine unevenly.
Keep a light tension in your glutes. Imagine you are holding a dollar bill in your back pocket. It is a subtle move, but it helps brace your spine without looking like you are trying too hard at a party.
Movement is meant to be enjoyed, not just survived. If you find that these in-between moments are the ones that actually leave you feeling wrecked, it might be time to look at how you are carrying yourself when you think you are resting.
