Addressing Post Ride Hip and Lower Back Strain

The Root of the Post-Ride Lockup
Cycling requires you to stay in a fixed, forward-flexed position for hours at a time. Your hip flexors are working in a shortened range over and over again, while your glutes are essentially put on cruise control.
When you finally stand up, your hips refuse to open back up because the tissues have adapted to that cramped position. If your hips are locked, your lower back has to pick up the slack every time you try to stand, twist, or walk.
How Physical Therapy Changes the Equation
Stretching after a ride might offer temporary relief, but it rarely fixes the underlying issue. A physical therapist looks at how your hips, pelvis, and core actually function together on and off the bike. That means checking your hip mobility, addressing strength imbalances between your quads and glutes, and looking at your pedaling mechanics. Instead of just treating the stiffness, physical therapy helps restore proper joint mechanics so you can finish a long ride without feeling like you aged ten years the second you unclip.
How to Keep Your Hips Open on the Trail You do not have to give up your favorite rides or live in a state of constant stiffness. If you want to keep pushing the pace without paying for it the next day, try these three adjustments:
Take movement breaks on long climbs. Every hour or so, get off the bike for thirty seconds. Do a quick standing hip extension or a couple of gentle twists to reset your pelvis before it locks in place.
Target the glutes, not just the hip flexors. Everyone stretches the front of their hips, but if your glutes are not firing properly while you pedal, your hip flexors will keep working overtime to pull your leg up.
Address lingering movement restrictions. If your hips feel stuck week after week, do not wait for it to turn into a chronic lower back issue.
Mountain biking is supposed to leave you tired from the effort, not broken by the posture. If your hips are constantly locking up on you, stop trying to stretch your way out of it. Come see us so we can unlock your movement, fix the root cause, and keep you riding strong all season long.
